Why do old cars have white tires?
Early auto tires were made of pure rubber and used various chemicals for better wear. Zinc oxide, a pure white substance, was a favorite due to its better traction capabilities. It also turned the entire tire white. However, this formula didn’t stand up to road hazards and wore more quickly than tire makers wanted. In the early days of cars and motorcycles, tires were white. Since natural rubber was not ideal for tires, they were fortified with zinc oxide, another white material. The superior carbon black later replaced zinc oxide as a means to strengthen tires, but, at the time, it was quite expensive.However, the white rubber did not offer sufficient endurance, so carbon black was added to the rubber to greatly increase tread life. Later, entirely black tires became available, the still extant white sidewalls being covered with a somewhat thin, black colored layer of rubber.The colour of natural rubber is white. The first rubber tyres were originally white in colour until a compound called carbon black was added to rubber during the manufacturing process. Carbon black radically increased the tensile strength and durability of the tyres and changed the colour of the tyres to black.
