Are Tweels better than tires?
Better Traction & Easier on Turf The MICHELIN X TWEEL sits flat with equal ground pressure edge to edge, where as conventional tires apply more pressure in the center of the tire. The Tweel provides noticeably better stability on side hills and in wet soggy conditions. Airless Tyres use strong interlaced spokes that surround the wheel. They are produced to have a mesh-like structure that can flex and change shape as the car drives and goes over bumps. The Tweel provides noticeably better stability on side hills and in wet soggy conditions. When conventional tires break traction they tend to kind of dig a hole due to the pressure concentrated in the center of the tire, whereas if the Tweels break traction they tend to leave more of a flat slide mark.Tweels aren’t just easier on the operator – they also wear better than regular tires, increase fuel economy with less rolling resistance, and are gentler on turf.Unlike traditional tyres, which are made of rubber and filled with compressed air, airless tyres use a special tread beam connected to a series of flexible spokes to support the weight of the vehicle from above. The Tweel Airless Radial Tire is a top loaded tire meaning that it performs similar to a bicycle tire or a suspension bridge. The spokes disburse the forces all the way around the tire radially much the same way air does in an air-filled tire.
Who makes Tweels?
Michelin Tweel® tires deliver excellent traction, comfort and stability while eliminating concerns about downtime and maintenance. The Tweel (a portmanteau of tire and wheel) is an airless tire design developed by the French tire company Michelin. Its significant advantage over pneumatic tires is that the Tweel does not use a bladder full of compressed air, and therefore cannot burst, leak pressure, or become flat.Michelin, the manufacturer of Tweel tyres, states that their industrial grade Tweel products have a lifespan of at least 4,000 hours and they also have a 6-year limited warranty.Because the Tweel is an open-frame tire, there’s no more risk of flats – ever. If you’re mowing in an area that’s exposed to sharp objects – such as an area close to a worksite or shop – this could save lots of downtime when it comes to checking pressure or fixing flat tires.Unlike pneumatic tires, Tweels require no air and can conform to all types of terrain, making for a much smoother ride. They also have a wear life up to 3x longer than pneumatic tires. Tweels are made exclusively to fit John Deere Z700 series and Z900 series ZTrak zero-turns and QuikTrak stand-on mowers. The MICHELIN X TWEEL’s high performance compounds and an efficient contact patch are designed to provide a long wear life that is two to three times that of a pneumatic tire at equal tread depth.
What are Tweels used for?
Tweel is useful for: vehicles that don’t have suspensions like lawn mowers – those low speed specialty vehicles that don’t have suspensions. Can you retread Tweels?
Currently, the TWEEL SSL is the only TWEEL capable of retreading. Retreadability will vary with usage history. While we have seen examples of TWEELS being retreaded successfully up to 5 times, Michelin’s warranty on a TWEEL retread is only for the first retread. The Michelin X Tweel SSL assemblies have a prorated limited warranty based on tread wear within the first 3 years from date of purchase. The usable Michelin X Tweel SSL tread depth is the original tread down to the level of 4/32nds (3mm) of tread remaining.Michelin, the manufacturer of Tweel tyres, states that their industrial grade Tweel products have a lifespan of at least 4,000 hours and they also have a 6-year limited warranty.
