Can you put commercial tyres on a motorhome?
Whilst it’s completely legal to fit a commercial van tyre to a motorhome, providing it’s the correct size and load rating, you won’t get all the benefits a specialist camping tyre will give you. Van tyres will be a cheaper option and you could expect to pay around 15% more for a motorhome tyre of the same brand. Often marked with the letter C for Commercial or CP for Camping-Car, this type of tyre better supports the heavy loads typical of motorhomes. Although not mandatory, CP tyres are highly recommended due to their robustness and ability to support the high loads specific to motorhomes.
Can you use trailer tires on a motorhome?
The tread package or pattern on an ST tire is designed to follow in a straight line behind the tow vehicle. Because of these specific tread designs, ST tires cannot be used on a motorized vehicle. They are not designed for steering maneuverability or drive axle applications. ST (Special Trailer) Tires Designed exclusively for trailers and towable campers. Built with stronger sidewalls to reduce swaying and improve load capacity. While they may look similar to other tires, ST tires should never be used on the driving axles of motorhomes.Even though it is possible to use different types of tires on an RV trailer, some tires are much better suited for the job. The four most common radial tire types that might be found on an RV trailer are passenger car tires, light truck tires, special trailer tires, and commercial truck/bus tires.
Can you put C-rated tyres on a motorhome?
A ‘C’ stands for a standard light commercial tyre. Generally, ‘CP’ marked tyres are recommended for most motorhomes that aren’t van conversions, and ‘C’ marked tyres are generally used for the latter, however it does seem that many secondhand motorhomes seen on the market do have ‘C’ tyres fitted these days. As of 01/05/2021, the European tyre label has changed significantly on the basis of updated, stricter European regulations (Regulation (EU) 2020/740). This new European tyre label applies to passenger car tyres (C1), light truck tyres (C2) and heavy truck tyres (C3).
Do motorhomes need special tires?
RV tires must bear significantly more weight than those of a passenger vehicle, and as such, motorhomes use tires specifically designed for this type of transportation. In practice, most RV trailers are running right at the limit of their weight carrying ability so inflating to the max is usually a safe rule.
What ply are motorhome tires?
For larger Class A motorhomes, it is indicated on the sidewall by a single alphabetic letter – typically G (14 ply) or H (16 ply). The higher the letter, or the number of internal plies, the stronger the tire. The D in 75D15 stands for diagonal or bias ply, indicating that the tire’s internal fabric layers are diagonally arranged, while the R in 75R15 stands for radial, meaning that the tire’s internal fabric layers are arranged radially from the center.
